Dear Future Teachers:
On behalf of the New Jersey Education Association, welcome to the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey. Our mission is to reach out, inspire, and support New Jersey middle and high school students who are considering careers as future teachers. Few professions are more rewarding and important than teaching. And never before has our nation needed you more.
President Obama has identified one of the most critical elements of education for the future: the supply of high quality teachers. It is estimated that more than three million teachers will be needed in the next ten years.
Teacher shortages will be particularly prevalent in high poverty schools and in subjects such as math, physics, chemistry, biology and general science, bilingual education/ESL, special education, world languages, and technology education. Our profession seeks future teachers from diverse, underrepresented backgrounds. And we have a particular shortage of male teachers in our classrooms.
We are here to support your career path, no matter what subjects you plan to teach and whether you plan to one day work in urban, suburban, or rural schools. Children are children everywhere and every child is entitled to have the best, highly trained teachers to promote academic progress and social skill development.
Please look at the programs and activities identified on our website that will support your interest in teaching. Please join your Future Educators Association (FEA) chapter at your high school. And if your school does not have a FEA chapter, please urge them to start one. I look forward to meeting you at your FEA chapter’s activities, at our NJFEA conferences, in your Tomorrow’s Teachers or pre-service elective courses, and at the Urban Teacher Academy.
I extend best wishes as you explore career opportunities in teaching, and know that you are going to one day make a wonderful and important difference in the lives of children in New Jersey’s schools.
