Teacher of the Year Draws a Packed House!  The first ever SNJEA-NJFEA program drew a packed house in the TCNJ Library Auditorium on December 7.  Headlining the evening’s program was Ms. Danielle Kovach, 2010-2011 New Jersey Teacher of the Year and special education teacher in the Hopatcong School District in Sussex County.  Larry Fieber, CFE Executive Director, opened the evening’s program with a special viewing of the Classroom Close-up, NJ segment on the 2010 Urban Teacher Academy Program.  A lively Q&A followed Ms. Kovach’s presentation and all attendees were treated to a reception afterwards to allow for informal discussions and networking.  This important program gave TCNJ education majors, TCNJ Urban Teacher Academy program graduates, NJFEA and SNJEA members, and NJFEA Student State Officers a closer look at the significance of the teaching profession, and the impact that one teacher can have on the lives of children.

NJFEA Inaugural Meeting – A Success!  On November 5, the Inaugural Meeting of the NJFEA was held during the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City.  The local chapters in attendance ratified the NJFEA Constitution and Bylaws, which signaled the official establishment of the New Jersey Future Educators Association.  Local chapter members had the opportunity to get to know each other, visit the convention floor, and hear the convention keynote speaker, CNN anchor and correspondent, Soledad O’Brien.  The NJFEA student state officers also had the exciting opportunity to personally meet Soledad O’Brien at the end of the day’s events.  The NJFEA Inaugural Meeting marked a significant step forward in building a statewide network of chapters supporting the growth and development of aspiring teachers.  We look forward to expanded local chapter participation at the 2011 NJEA Convention.

Kean University NJFEA Conference A Success!  On Friday, October 8, Kean University, in collaboration with the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey, hosted the second NJFEA Conference this year.  Forty-nine high schools from across New Jersey were represented, and over 400 students, FEA chapter advisers, and guests were in attendance for a wide range of workshops.  Also, the conference featured the first NJFEA Banner Competition.  Congratulations to Lawrence High School for taking First Place, and Memorial High School for taking Second Place!  The NJFEA student state officers were also represented and took an active role in assisting with the day’s activities.  The Center for Future Educators would also like to thank the members of the Kean University Student New Jersey Education Association (SNJEA) who were instrumental in ensuring that the day ran smoothly for their high school guests.  Classroom Close-up, NJ was also present to film sessions of the conference and to conduct interviews of students.  Check back for details regarding the future airing of the segment on the conference.  Classroom Close-up, NJ is a co-production of the New Jersey Education Association and NJN Public Television.

NJFEA Officers Meet.   On Saturday, September 11, 2010, the NJFEA student state officers held their first business meeting on the campus of The College of New Jersey.  The officers had a full agenda addressing such issues as:  planning for the NJFEA Conference at Kean University on October 8, discussing the development of a newsletter, and considering topics and approaches to a service project involving local FEA chapters.  The NJFEA State Director and Executive Director of the Center for Future Educators, Larry Fieber, distributed personalized NJFEA business cards to each state officer, and also gave the officers the exciting news that they will have the opportunity to attend the 22nd Annual Future Educators Association International Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 18-20, 2011.  See Meeting Minutes.

NJFEA State Officers Elected.  The Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey is pleased to announce the election of the 2010-2011 state student officers for the newly formed New Jersey Future Educators Association (NJFEA). The state officers are president , Shelby Miller of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, Princeton Junction; executive vice president , Adedayo Jobi-Odeneye of Science Park High School, Newark; vice presidents for community service/special projects, Leilani Bell of Science Park High School, Newark, and Amy Stoops of Collingswood High School, Collingswood; secretary, Jenna Albi of Lawrence High School, Lawrence; northern regional representative, Jessica Krupa of Mahwah High School, Mahwah; central regional representative Dina Gold of Hunterdon Central High School, Flemington; and southern regional representative, Amy Stoops of Collingswood High School, Collingswood.

These new state officersintend to build relationships and collaborate with future teachers from nearly forty NJFEA high school and middle school chapters to learn about the challenges and rewards of teaching.

The 2010 Urban Teacher Academy program makes news!   Held on July 6-16, the 2010 Urban Teacher Academy headlined on the front page of the July 17 edition of The Times of Trenton.  The 2010 UTA program will also be the subject of two segments of Classroom Close-Up, NJ scheduled to air on NJN this fall.  Stay tuned for date and time listings!  Filming of the UTA students in action took place on July 13 and July 15.   Classroom Close-up, NJ is a magazine program focusing on innovative projects happening in New Jersey public schools.  This 30-minute weekly series features the students, teachers, school staff and communities who create and participate in successful school projects and events.   Emmy winning Classroom Close-up, NJ airs on NJN Public Television every Monday at 7 p.m. and every Saturday at 9 a.m.  Classroom Close-up, NJ is a co-production of the New Jersey Education Association and NJN Public Television, with additional funding provided by PSE&G.

NJFEA State Officers Undergo Leadership Training.  NJFEA state officers participated in a two-day leadership training program on July 22-23, at Montclair State University to help prepare them for their new roles.  The group learned about exemplary leadership practices, team building, and strategic planning among a host of other issues critical to public education.  The state officers were also treated to a night out at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark to see the play “Rent.”

Tomorrow’s Teachers Training – A Success!  Teachers from nearly 40 more New Jersey high schools underwent the Tomorrow’s Teachers Training program at Fairleigh Dickinson University (June 28-29) and Rowan University (June 30-July 1).   Since 2007, nearly 130 high schools have participated in this program.

The First NJFEA State Officer Applicants Meet!   Applicants for leadership positions in the New Jersey Future Educators Association met on Thursday, June, 24, 2010, at the NJEA Headquarters in Trenton for an orientation session.  Eight high school students applied for leadership positions and were given a formal introduction to their new state association by Larry Fieber, Executive Director of the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey, Wendell Steinhauer, Vice President of the NJEA, John Amato, International President of Phi Delta Kappa, and Jeanne Muzi, New Jersey Teacher of the Year (2009-10).  FEA chapter advisors and parents accompanied the students, who will represent the NJFEA’s first leadership team and who will help guide the future direction of the new state association.

The Future Educators Association has joined a small group of student organizations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO).  This recognition brings with it eligibility to receive federal Perkins funding to support the efforts of state and local FEA chapters.  See this press release for more information.
